What is Reiki?

Reiki (pronounced ‘ray-key’) is a Japanese word and means ‘Universal Life Force Energy’. Eastern traditions have always recognised and worked with this energy, which flows through all living things and is vital to wellbeing.

Usui Reiki is the natural healing system that was developed by Dr Mikao Usui, a Japanese Buddhist monk and scholar, in the first part of the last century. It was originally used as a method of spiritual development, but in the West today we tend to use it primarily for healing.

How does it work?

Universal energy is all around us. When using Reiki, we’re allowing a better flow of this energy to improve all aspects of our wellbeing, either for ourselves or for others.

Scientific research has shown that the energy emitted from the healer’s hands during a treatment helps to activate and enhance the body’s own natural self-healing processes.

Therefore, Reiki works with the wisdom of your body to help restore harmony and balance to the mind, body and spirit. You don’t need to have any beliefs when receiving Reiki, so it's possible for anyone to experience its benefits, including babies and animals.

And because it may help in relieving stress and associated symptoms, both physical and emotional wellbeing may be improved, including helping to enhance the efficiency of the immune system. Reiki can support all aspects of everyday life.

Can Reiki help me?

Because Reiki is such a gentle therapy, it can be suitable for everyone, from the newborn to the frail and elderly, during pregnancy and after surgery, regardless of your state of health.
Reiki is often used both independently and together with other conventional or complementary treatments. It may help to accelerate healing of physical problems, balance your emotions and mentally calm and soothe you, relieving symptoms of even long-term problems. It can be deeply relaxing and may allow you to experience a profound sense of peace and contentment.

Reiki can also be used to encourage and support any positive personal changes you may wish to make, such as adopting a healthier lifestyle. It may help you improve the quality of any relationships, whether at home or at work, and so allow you to enjoy a more resourced state of being.

Complementary Therapies are not a substitute for medical care. If ever your general health concerns you at any time, you must always seek advice from your GP.
